Today’s exhortation – inner vows
In continuation of areas of our lives we need to have inner healing, we must look at “inner vows.” What is an inner vow? It is a vow made to ourselves to take control in an area of our lives because of a need to protect ourselves from repeating a hurtful or fearful event. They are called inner vows because we usually make them in our hearts and minds and not with our mouths. The following situations and statements show examples of inner vows. E.g. One who has suffered a broken heart will say “I will never fall in love again” Or “I’ll never trust another man/woman again or I’ll get him/her back for doing this to me.” Other e.gs are, because we may have seen our parents go through a very bad marriage or divorce, we may say “I will never get married!” Or “I’ll never be like my father/mother” or “I’ll never have children.”
Also, because these are vows we make to ourselves, what we’re doing is saying to God, “I will take care of this area of my life, thank You very much. I can’t trust You or anyone else but myself for this.” At this stage, God being the perfect gentleman that He is, takes His hands off that area of our lives. What happens next is that the enemy comes in where God isn’t and takes every opportunity to cause trouble for us. What follows is we become angry, bitter etc. But, here’s the thing about vows, God forbids us from making them. The bible says, “But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.” James 5:12).
