1 Thessalonians 5

September 28, 2017 by Alice Potter

Prayer Letter 29th September 2017

Hello Everyone,

I trust you are well.

Today I have spent some time in our local Police Station on Chaplaincy Duty. Such a privilege.

  • Numbers of people coming to the front desk with all manner of problems.
  • In depth work going on in the Major Crime Department, Collisions and the Complex Abuse Department.
  • This was the case as I made my way around the whole of the building.

I so admire the tenacity to get the work done, to follow everything up and to see things through to completion.

As I have done in the past, I want to say most sincerely a “Very Big Thank You” to all of you.

I have been very aware over this last weekend of the Police Memorial Service that took place in Cardiff. I know St David’s Hall well, being a musician and having visited on a number of occasions whilst growing up in Wales.

So today I am homing in on our gratitude for all those Officers who are no longer with us, their families, friends and Colleagues, still affected by their deaths.

However, here we are today and you press on as ever.

I saw the following verses in our Church Office this week, I am sharing them with you. I too want to be active in this and encouraging you as you work alongside your Colleagues – they may not be Christians, but…………

“Encourage one another and build each other up” 1Thess 5.11 and

“Let us consider how we can spur one another on to love and good deeds” Heb: 10. 24

Please feel free to contact me or add a comment below

May you know God’s Encouragement in your lives this coming week.

In Him

Alice.

Today’s exhortation – in spirit and in truth

Continuing on the subject of worship, The Lord Jesus said, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John‬ ‭4:24‬). In ‘spirit’ refers to a part of the human being that worships God. The bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 that man is a three dimensional being made up of spirit, soul and body. Our body relates to the world around us through our five senses. Our body is world-conscious. Our soul is our self-consciousness and is where our will is. Our spirit is God-conscious. That is the part of our being that worships God. When one is born-again, it’s the spirit that is born again. In ‘truth’ means in sincerity and genuineness. No hidden agendas.

There has to be an absolute openness and honesty about the expression of our emotions. It isn’t about what we stand to gain, but what we’ve to offer to Him. In truth also refers to the truth about who God is and what He does, hence why He is worthy of worship. It must be what we really desire to do like in this verse – “My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.” (Psalm‬ ‭84:2‬). “As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God…” Psalm‬ ‭42:1-2‬). He is worthy of it all.

Today’s exhortation – our secret weapon

As children of God who have God’s blessed assurance that all things work together for our good, we ought to be the most joyful people on earth. It goes without saying that the Christian life is full of trials, but we’re told, “brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials” James‬ ‭1‬:‭2‬). Why? Because joy is our secret weapon! – “the joy of The Lord is our strength” Nehemiah (8:10). Have you noticed that when you are full of joy, you feel on top of the world or you feel you can overcome any obstacle or feel like you can jump over the tallest building? You are also full of laughter and your body fights illness better. No wonder the bible says, “Always be joyful.” (1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:16‬).

I’ve also heard people say I don’t want to go to heaven because it will be boring. In case the fact is lost on us, God invented joy and the bible says, In His presence is fullness of joy; At His right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalms‬ ‭16‬:‭11). A preacher once said, “Joy is the serious business of heaven!” “Have you ever seen someone full of joy looking glum ?” It’s impossible to look glum and serious and be full of joy! Heaven will be a place you don’t want to miss. That’s where real joy can be found and it’s in endless supply.

Lead Ambassador’s Easter Message

Easter – The beginning of the end

That my God should die for me

I can still remember the exact spot I stood a few years back, when I first heard the words from the Wesley hymn ‘And can it be’ (although it was the slightly more upbeat version by the band Phatfish).  I’d been a Christian for just under ten years by this time.  I understood grace, I was born again and I loved Jesus.  However, when I heard the words ‘That my God should die for me’ they hit me like a hammer, tears rolled down my face.  You see, I knew that Jesus the man had died for me, and believe me, I was grateful, but when it occurred to me that God himself had died for me, I was truly undone.

Mind blowing

Think about it.  The most powerful being that ever was and ever will be, He who can create a universe that we still can’t see the end of, who can create life itself, this ‘person’ dies for you and me.  Not only that, but we scorned Him, we laughed as He died and suffered and turned our backs on Him, spat at His feet (yes, if you have ever sinned then you have done all this).  So not only is he the most important being that has ever been, but we are the most hateful.  Would the Queen give her life to save a virus that was going to make her suffer? Not a great analogy I know, but it’s the closest I can think of.

I’m trying to express the enormity of what happened that first Easter and what happens each time a non-believer surrenders their life to Christ.  Each time I think about it, it leaves me speechless!  I utterly have no adequate response.

Ultimate leadership, ultimate God

I am shortly due to attend my inspector’s public order course.  The last time I attended shield training was at Hounslow about two decades ago!  My memories of the inspectors position in public order training then was somewhere at the back, well away from the action, barking orders at the sergeants, who, in turn, then barked orders at the PCs who themselves had all the bricks and petrol bombs thrown at them.

The Met is short of public order inspectors at the moment, so I volunteered thinking, well at least it won’t be as dangerous as when I was a PC.  Perhaps they even put inspectors in control rooms these days leading via the heli-telly!  Then I got talking to an inspector colleague, who, to my horror, informed me that nowadays, they put inspectors at the front of the serial! (I’m in my 50s, what was I thinking)

But this is like our God.  Easter separates our faith from all others.  In no other religion do their ‘gods’ step down into earth and die for the people they created and love.  This is true leadership, leading from the front at its ultimate extreme.  Not the demanding do, do, do of other religions but the done, done, done of the God of grace.  God not only leads his public order serial from the front, but he tells his PSU to go home and relax, he’ll sort out the riots himself and give his life in the process! Now that’s a God I can truly and freely love!

The apostle Paul sums it up in Romans 5:7-8

“Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us”

Not only death, but life also

As Paul put it, if Jesus never rose from the grave then we (Christians) are of all people to be pitied (1 Corinthians 15:19).  The hope of all those who follow Jesus is pinned to that one act of resurrection. If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, then we are still in our sins and condemnation rests upon us.

But the truth is that Jesus did rise again! Death was defeated on that first Easter and hope reigns supreme.  And if you have turned to Jesus, all this is yours at no cost to you.  No more striving to keep a demanding law, we have guaranteed eternal life with Jesus.

Rejoice Always

Police officers sadly witness some of the worst depths that humanity can stoop to, and it seems like new depths are being invented daily.  But the truth is that everything, even the worst tragedies, pale into insignificance when you see your life in the perspective of Easter.  This is why Paul commands us to ‘Rejoice Always’ (Philippians 4:4 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

There is no greater event in history, we are now in end times and they are glorious.  So my brothers and sisters, this Easter and every day, Rejoice, I say again rejoice!

If you don’t yet know the joy of surrendering everything to the one who gave it all that first Easter, then ask Jesus into your heart today.  He won’t turn anyone away!

Today’s exhortation – stop complaining!

I believe nothing robs us of our blessings more than complaining! It may seem that complaining is being honest but it leads to unbelief and fear and ultimately stops us taking hold of what God has for us. As a matter of fact God hates complaining and destroyed the Israelites who complained in the wilderness on their way to the promise land. The bible says that, “Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the Lord, and when He heard them His anger was aroused. Then fire from the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.” Numbers‬ ‭11:1). Ultimately, their complaining prevented them from entering the promise land!

The bible says that God works everything together for our good so even when we go through hardships we can be sure that they too will work for our good. Time and time again God comes through for us, but because of our impatience, we end up complaining. “God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (Numbers‬ ‭23:19‬). Let’s make a conscious effort not to complain because by doing that we are allowing unbelief and fear to come in and that’s what the devil wants. As the bible says, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (‭I Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭18‬). Amen

Blessings in the name of Jesus Christ our Supernatural King,

I hope you are doing well this morning and if you are not, trust that prayers are being said for your healing, whatever the issue. We pray for the Holy Spirit to make utterings on our behalf for you for with God, nothing is impossible. Paul in the book of 1Thessalonians chp5:17 encourages us to “Pray without ceasing. 18. Though we maybe passing through this season, remember seasons change and God will work everything out for our good!

Please unite with me and pray for these urgent requests.

Please pray for the teams on the ground doing all they can to help the people of Haiti. Please do not forget the people of St.Vincent & Jamaica who have lost loved ones and have had homes, hospitals, Churches, shops & schools as well as historical public buildings and farming crops destroyed following Hurricane Matthew. Flood damage has been extensive. This is the case in Florida too, where the death toll I last read was 38. God we need you now, send help from your Sanctuary and strengthen your children in these troubled times, in Jesus name.
  • Pray for Fiona & Tim Spargo-Mabbs as they continue to campaign for drug awareness and safety to be taught in all schools in England. As their diaries fill with appointments to visit schools and give media interviews; please pray for Gods protection, clarity and wisdom over Fiona, as she speaks to the Government, various organisations and most importantly, children, teachers and parents. In particular, please pray for the presentation Fiona is giving to year 3 children pupils, the youngest she has spoken to concerning drug awareness. We pray that God continues to open doors for them and the DSMFoundation, in Jesus name.
  • Pray for Jan in who has recently lost a dear neighbour and friend. Pray for the family of the deceased that God will comfort them in the time of distress and the quiet moments, in Jesus name.

  • Pray for Gilly’s friend who is going for a biopsy for a mole on her leg tomorrow. Please pray that all will be well and dispel any form of fear she may have, in Jesus name.
  • Pray for the recent retirees and those taking voluntary redundancies throughout the Forensic Services and Specialist Crime Directorate SC&O4. Let us pray that God will direct their paths and open doors to those who are going on to find new employment or establish their own businesses. May the favour of God be upon them. Please that morale is restored as these staggered departures continue to take place until the end of 2016, in Jesus name.
  • Pray for marriages and families struggling in this current financial climate. Pray that Gods love, wisdom and peace prevails. We speak to the spirit of discord and disrespect to be broken and banished in Jesus name.
  • Pray for Inspector Chris, that he is recovering well and that God will be the Balm applied to the condition in his body. Pray for his complete healing and renewed strength, in Jesus
  • Pray for the homeless; migrants and those living in warzones. We cry out to God for the plight of these people, especially children traumatised by what they are seeing and experiencing. We pray that they will be peacemakers of today, in Jesus mighty name, amen.

Thank you for joining me in prayer and let us ask God to receive our prayer as a memorial being offered up to Him and to “show us a token for good”, as we offer these request to God. We are called to be intercessors and pray that God will make a way & “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it”

Have a very blessed day, until next time.
1Thessalonians 5;25. Brethren, pray for us”.
