I have to admit having seen the latest Super Hero Movie ‘Justice League’ I got to wondering if we had Super Hero’s could most of the worlds people problems be solved, I got to wondering if we are meant to be Super Hero’s in Jesus name. We look as some of the amazing bible characters they did astonishing things in Jesus name. They were were people like you and me, faulty, problematic, unwilling, contesting, argumentative and yet He still chose us………. pause for a minute and have a think on this one:
Luke 17:20-22Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)
20 Asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He replied to them by saying, The kingdom of God does not come with signs to be observed or with visible display,
21 Nor will people say, Look! Here [it is]! or, See, [it is] there! For behold, the kingdom of God is within you [in your hearts] and among you [surrounding you]. That is quite a profound thing to say and yet Jesus gave power and authority to His disciples and I am aware as we all are that the words of Jesus in Mark 16 namely: The Great Commission:
The Great Commission
…16Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17And these signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will be made well.”…
I can often be found in prayer simply asking God “what can I do to stem the killing?” this may be an odd thing to say but when I hear that a minority community are being murdered in over 30 countries worldwide it is a bitter pill to swallow: Let me explain, some of you will be aware that every 20th of November events in church services (if permitted) remember those who have been lost to violence in the Transgender community, each year this number goes up, this year 325 people lost their lives for no other reason than they are different, in the UK, four related suicides in prisons, two teenagers took their own life and one adult a Phd in Chemistry also committed suicide by poisoning themselves and one case in the media struck a chord, Transgender offered Asylum in New Zealand to escape persecution in the UK, it has in my world been a bizarre year 2017. If I were a super Hero could have any of this sad stories been prevented? But then aren’t we all super hero’s? Kingdom of God is within us, He gave us the great commission with power an authority – so what hinders us (include myself in this question). The saddest story for me recently learnt for a Transgender Christian facebook page called Transgender Church, the person is a teenager aged about mid teens, Christian parents but their suicide note is heart breaking. The young person is known as Leelah and has suffered where really they should not have but been supported. I wont add the letter here, only to say that Parents did their best, however when something like this is biologically encoded into one’s DNA it is far from possible for any human intervention to constrain a person to be a particular way. Only God can make such an intervention by a miracle.
Over the years I hear horror stories of how Christians try to constrain people to be like them, rather than let God intervene, I wondered if we are so full of insecurity that we lose our personal sense of being if anything comes close to challenge it. The gospels teach me that whatever state you are in God can change you, crumbs Jesus did incredible things to help people well beyond any human capability to help: Lepers, Sickness, calming the sea, turning water to wine (Good wine at that!), in every instant He never forced people but allowed them freedom to choose. When you are part of a community under so much pressure, there is only two choices look up in hope or down in despair, for me the looking up is best option.
I know for many of us out there it has been tough last few years, hardship, challenge, health issues, opposition but there is one thing we all know God dwells in us same power raised Jesus dwells in us with all our foibles perhaps then we can make 2018 a better year for all, take hope we are not forgotten, Like Paul and Silas we keep praising, praying in all circumstances and see the power of the Lord not by might or power but by His spirit
Let us help each other, respect each other and if help is needed seek the right kind of help, a colleague thinks he knows every answer to illness, I pondered then realised how dangerous that can be if unqualified. It brought back the story in
And He told them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting
So, let us learn those lessons, seek expertise if we need it and pray and fast for a brighter tomorrow, take heart God wants you to have the best life can offer
Amongst the darkest of times there is a light it is up to us how we respond to His calling, Perhaps as Christians we hold off judging others, realising how short we are of His glory
ourselves, for if we welcome all in love without judging that can change lives. Back in June a drug offender came into our church for help, wanted to sue the toilet have have his bottle of water refilled, I obliged, He did not say he was a young person about mid 20’s before leaving the church foyer he hugged me thanking me for not judging him, there is a huge moral there. Things have happened that caused me to judge and react this year, not for myself for there is no personal gain, but for those who are vulnerable and will suffer because a management decision has put some communities at risk, am I wrong or could one argue I and defending the weak, a question not yet answered but being prayed over!
be blessed have a great Christmas and New Year let us all work for a better 2018 with Jesus at the Helm, God at the head and the Holy Spirit the engine room powering each one of us to ever greater things for the kingdom!
