“To understand where we are today it’s good to reflect on the very foundation of where we came from”
Founded in 1883 by Catherine Gurney, OBE, in Notting (Hill, West London, the London Christian Police Family is, together with the other associations that trace their roots to this moment) the oldest official police staff association in the United Kingdom. We spread quickly throughout the UK and across the Globe. At that time we were known as the International Christian Police Association. Today this no longer exists as one association, but continues through fellowship and partnership with a number of similar organisations across the United Kingdom and many more throughout the world. If you wish to be put in touch with the association of Christian Police in your area, please contact us and we’ll put you in touch.
Catherine Gurney was raised in South London. She was the youngest daughter of Joseph Gurney, a member of the firm of shorthand writers who served the houses of parliament and central criminal court. Catherine also developed excellent secretarial skills and used her abilities in Christian service that included organising and leading Bible studies.
The officer stated to her, “What, do you think a police officer has a soul?”
Catherine’s lasting contribution to the Police Service was the founding of the police convalescent
She also founded police orphanages and schools whose ongoing work is continued by the Gurney Fund in the south and the St George Police Trust in the north. It is this tradition of practical Christianity that the LCPF aims to promote.
Not content with what she had accomplished in the United Kingdom, she also travelled abroad extensively and sought to continue her work wherever she went, making the christian association international. Today this no longer exists as one association, but continues through fellowship and partnership with similar organisations around the world.
We are still really in a building stage and look forward to what the future holds.
