Today’s exhortation – generational sins

Why are generational sins and resulting curses passed down and why do we’ve to get affected by someone else’s sins? In terms of blessings and curses, it appears God does not see us as individuals, but as interpersonal parts of families that have existed over the generations. Sometimes, God calls Himself “The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob” and to see how He doesn’t see us individuals when it comes to blessings and curses, we can look at these verses. The bible says, “Even Levi, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, so to speak, for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.” (Hebrews‬ ‭7:9-10‬). In this case, Levi the great-grand child of Abraham received the blessings of Abraham’s actions even before he was born. Thus, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Levi all benefited from the actions of Abraham.

Just as blessings are passed down for generations, so are some sins and curses. God is merciful but also Just! He revealed Himself to Moses saying, “The LORD, the LORD, a compassionate and merciful God, patient, always faithful and ready to forgive. He continues to show his love to thousands of generations, forgiving wrongdoing, disobedience, and sin. He never lets the guilty go unpunished, punishing children and grandchildren for their parents’ sins to the third and fourth generation.” (Exodus‬ ‭34:6-7‬). What we see is God’s mercy and justice both at work. He’s very merciful and His blessings go on for thousands of generations, but the punishment only to three to four. Again the good news is the chains of sins and curses can be broken by confession and repentance in Jesus name. To be cont….
