Today’s exhortation – We are Christians.
Names are packed with purpose and are significant to a person’s identity. Being called a Christian holds much power if we get a hold of what that means for us. What we hear has an impact on us because, “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17). There’re many occasions when God changed the names of people whom He chose for special purposes. Joshua was one of them. Before Israel inherited the promised land, 12 men including Joshua were chosen to spy it out. However before they left, the bible says, “…Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.” Numbers 13:16). Hoshea who’s name means “Saviour” had his name changed to Joshua which means “God saves.” How’s this significant ?
Out of the 12 men, only 2 believed God could save them and one of these was Joshua. I believe the more he heard the name Joshua, the more he had faith that God saves. So whilst others shook with fear at the sight of giants in the land, he wasn’t afraid of them because he had faith that God Saves. We also have a new name, “Christians!” followers of Christ! As Christians the bible says, “Ye are of God… and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.” (1 John 4:4). It also means, sin shall not have dominion over us nor any bad habit have power of us. It also means I am a child of God and “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13).
