Today’s exhortation – freedom from guilt
I believe God loves us too much to let us carry on living in guilt and so He may allow misfortune to come our way if that’s what it takes to bring us to repentance. This is evident in how He dealt with Joseph’s brothers. It took extreme hunger to get them to Egypt where they will not only receive food, but will be brought to repentance and receive forgiveness. The following verses indicate they were avoiding Egypt because of guilt. The bible says, “When Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” And he said, “Indeed I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down to that place and buy for us there, that we may live and not die.”” (Genesis 42:1-2).
They were looking at one another because no one wanted to bring up the subject of Egypt where they had buried their guilt, Joseph! We too quite often try to bury our guilt and try to forget. As previously mentioned, Joseph is a type of Christ and so the brothers going to Joseph is similar to us going to The Lord Jesus. He’s the bread we need to live and the One who forgives us. He’s also the One who bore our shame and guilt on the cross at Calvary. He desires that we don’t carry on living in guilt to our past, sins, failures, shame and abuse. Amen
