Today’s exhortation – altars

The altar is a place of sacrifice and I believe they represent landmarks in our Christian journey. Abraham built four altars in all and each of them had their significance. The first was after he entered the promised land. This was to give himself to God as a sacrifice and similarly when we receive the promise of salvation through Jesus, we too must lay our lives on the altar as a living sacrifice to Him. It’s also a place of intimacy with God where we pray, read and meditate on His word and offer Him sacrifices of praise. There may be times when we may fall or move away from where The Lord wants us, but we can always go back. Abraham left Canaan to go to Egypt where he experienced a moment of weakness and lied that Sarah was his wife!

His deception was discovered and he was asked to leave. When we leave the place God wants us to be, we become vulnerable. He forgot God’s promise to make him a father of many nations and became fearful of death. He returned to Canaan, built an altar and called upon the Name of the Lord. I believe he built it to reaffirm his commitment to God and to reconnect with Him. When we fall, we too must return to The Lord, build an altar and reconnect with Him. The last altar was for the test of his faith to see if he would sacrifice what was dearest to him, Isaac! It represents what we love so much that might hold us back from God. Without the tests of our faith, there’ll be no testimonies! Have a blessed weekend. Amen
