Today’s exhortation – worship
What does it mean to worship God? The English verb of worship means to pay homage or respect. Some synonyms that help explain it are, adore, magnify, revere, exalt. In Hebrew, worship is ‘shadach’ translated to bow down, to prostrate, to beseech humbly or to do reverence. Generally worship involves an attitude of the body and the best demonstration of it is in this incident. The bible says, “And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.” (Luke 7:37-38).
To set the scene, the fragrant oil was very expensive and cost a year’s wages; a woman’s hair was her glory; she kissed His feet in adoration, poured out her soul through her tears and used those tears to wash His feet. Humbled herself even more by using Her glory on His feet which were dirty from walking and then anointed them with her precious fragrance. This was all done publicly. She made herself of no reputation, put her glory at His feet, poured out her soul and bowed before The Lord. It’s important to note that the quality of our worship is not defined by our actions but what’s in our hearts.
