The Stoppa Coppa Society, was founded in 1980, by John Wright when he noticed Mothers getting a big round of applause for being mothers. That made him think of other people that the public take for granted like the Police and Traffic Wardens.
It was founded on the basis that all members are asked to do is to stop Police Officers and say, “Excuse me Officer, I would just like you to know that we appreciate you. Without you we would have chaos. Live up to your high calling!”
One WPC in Norwich burst into tears when he said this. She replied, ‘I have had nothing but abuse all morning and was thinking of resigning, but now I won’t!’ Of course as a Christian Society, often what follows for us is an opportunity to share the Gospel.
John Wright is a director of ‘Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship’ and is renowned for his fearless engagement in personal evangelism. He has also produced a DVD on ‘Talking to Strangers’.
From a privileged background, he is also no stranger to the police, having served time in prison for a crime he strongly denies which got him into the Guinness book of records for the longest trial ever!
God, however had a plan and John was able to use the Holy Spirit to heal fellow prisoners and over 40 of them came to faith!
A chance hearing about the Stoppa Coppa Society at an event in 2014 inspired one of our LCPF members to contact John. God’s timing being perfect, it just so happened that John, who is now over 80, was looking for someone to take over the Stoppa Coppa Society. Who better than the London Christian Police Family?
We’re busy preparing for a national rollout of this initiative, if you’re signed up to our newsletter, you’ll receive an update on progress.
